Conservatives Secure Change to Constitution

Councillor David Stevens:
“enhanced powers for the Corporate, Community and
External Affairs Panel”

See Evening Post report

Reading, 25 June 2008:  Reading Borough Conservatives are pleased to announce that at the meeting of full council on 24 June, their motion was passed to extend the call-in powers of the Corporate, Community and External Affairs (CCEA) Panel.

The council agreed to amend the Constitution of Reading Borough Council following a proposal by the Conservative Chairman of the CCEA, Cllr David Stevens, to give the CCEA the increased power to refer up to one third or 4 (whichever is the higher) of the decisions taken back to the Cabinet for reconsideration or to the full council.

Cllr Stevens said, “Given the new political landscape of the council, the role of the CCEA is vitally important in holding the Cabinet to account.  It is a role that has been little-used in recent years.  This amendment to the Constitution will assist the panel in holding the Executive to account and ensure the efficient use of taxpayer’s money for the provision of council services.  My aim is to see the highest quality services provided at the best value for money.”
