Education & Children’s Services Scrutiny

Councillor Mark Ralph
New Chairman, Cllr Mark Ralph

 “new chairman, changed agenda”

Reading, 25 June 2008:  Reading Borough Conservatives announce that Cllr Mark Ralph, Conservative Lead Spokesman for Education and Lifelong Learning and newly appointed Chair of the Education and Children’s Services Scrutiny Panel, will chair his first Panel on Wednesday 25 June.  Cllr Mark Ralph has already initiated special reports for discussion at today’s meeting and intends that his chairmanship is characterised by an emphasis on actively seeking to involve more stakeholders in the scrutiny process.

Cllr Mark Ralph said:  “With all of the pressures of globalisation, increased economic competition and an ageing population in the UK, it is vital that our adults of tomorrow are appropriately skilled and socially responsible.”

“A huge responsibility rests on parents and the Education system alike to ensure that these challenges are met.”

“I am keen that this Scrutiny Panel should involve a wide range of stakeholders:  teachers, pupils, governors, officers and add real value to the Educational provision for Reading.  Where there are concerns we shall address them and where there is success we shall try to build upon it.”

Cllr Mark Ralph added, “In addition to items already scheduled for this meeting, I have requested reports on ‘The development and implementation of Diplomas’, ‘Preparations for the change in the age of admission to Primary Schools’, ‘The review of school places and admission arrangements’ and requested an update on changes at the Learning and Skills Council, detailing impacts on post-16 education.  There have been concerns expressed on many of these subjects and I hope we shall be suitably reassured!”
