Support Our Small Shops

Reading East MP, Rob Wilson, and local Conservative Councillors are encouraging people to support their local independent shops and services such as butchers, post offices, greengrocers, pubs, dentists and other family-run businesses.

Small shops are at the heart of our high streets and local centres. They offer diversity and choice and provide a really personal service to their community but in the current economic situation these independent retailers are under threat. In addition they face a rising burden of regulation and tax, a daily battle against crime and violence, and competition from the growth of out-of-town shopping centres.

Rob Wilson commented, “People I meet say they are concerned by the decline of our community shopping areas. I am concerned about community decline and what that can mean for our quality of life.

“Many people remember long-established local shops coming to the end of the road and it’s very saddening. I don’t want us to end up with uniform shops and cloned shopping areas, with individual enterprises being squeezed out of business. I am saying to people – use them or lose them.”

Local Conservatives will be highlighting the Support Our Small Shops campaign in local shopping centres throughout Reading over the next few weeks.

To further recognise small shops, local Conservatives are asking people to nominate a local business that provides a particularly good service to our community.
